The whole fleet of tanks under Protank's management comply strictly with the codes of pressurized vessel design issued by ISO (International Standards Organization) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers).

To enhance the safety standard in tank container operation, Protank continues to upgrade its equipment and facilities so as to achieve a higher satisfactory standard from its customers.

Protank provides customers with tank containers of various capacities ranging from 21,000 liters up to 25,000 liters for carrying different classes of hazardous/non-hazardous material which is promulgated by the International Maritime Organization, a subsidiary of The United Nations and which is incorporated into the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code).

1.History and Development of Tank Containers
'Fuel supplies' at war or during military training at some remote area used to be a challenge because it was not economical for small quantity transportation and yet the actual demand was not always predictable. To store the fuel locally in bulk therefore was developed.

In 1950s, U.S. army tried to use the tank containers for storing gasoline in bulk. The tank container was re-useable and could be delivered to anywhere when there was a demand. In 1960s, the tank container was firstly introduced for commercial purpose of loading of consumption goods such as Wine; Alcohol; petrochemical products; fuels etc…The very first tank container was two cigar-shaped long tubes mounted in a 40 ft L x 4.3 ft H rack. It was called the 'Cigar Box'. In 1960s the shippers used such the tank containers for shipping Wine and Sherry from Spain or Portugal to north Europe.
After 50-60 years' evolution, Cigar Boxes have turned into modern tank containers for shipping liquids, gases, powders and granules in all intermodal transport. The benefits are enormous: large volume transportation and thus lower shipping cost, increase of stock capacity and safer mode sustaining long haulage (as tank containers must comply with all safety rules on pressure and temperature, etc.). No extra cost will be incurred in comparison with transportation by barrels and drums in traditional way.
2. Acceptable products to be transported in tank containers
Various hazardous materials in liquid form like gas, powder or granules are classified from Class one (1) to nine (9) in accordance with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code (IMDG) issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Similarly, the Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fats Association Ltd (FOSFA) also outlines regulations governing tank containers for foodstuff grade commodities. Whether it is liquified Class 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 materials or foodstuff commodities, Protank is able to supply qualified and approved tank containers which fully comply with the standard safety codes and provide full technical support to meet customers' demand.
3. Specification of Dangerous Cargoes
Dangerous cargoes are categorized by their hazardous nature.
The IMDG Code issued by the International Maritime Organization outlines precised and detailed rules governing the transportation of dangerous good at sea. The various classifications and illustrations are listed as below :
4. Max/Min payload based on IMO/IMDG
Liquid petrochemical products are restricted based on the loadable quantity given by IMDG Code. There are some principles and formulas to comply for loading liquid cargos into tank containers, where cargo temperature and coefficient of cubical expansion of the liquid are measured.

•Dangerous Cargo:Max and Min loadable quantity shall be 95% and 80% of the tank nominal capacity, respectively.
•Non-Dangerous Cargo:Max and Min loadable quantity shall be 97% and 75% of the tank nominal capacity, respectively.
Example :
Dangerous cargo "Phenol" and Non-Dangerous Cargo "Lubricating Oil" loaded into a 24,000 liter tank container :

Phenol (SG:1.06; Un Number:2312; Class:6.1)
(Tank capacity x density of intended cargo) x 95% = Max loadable quantity
(Tank capacity x density of intended cargo) x 80% = Min loadable quantity
(24,000L*1.06M(KGS)/V(L))*95% = 24,168 KGS
(24,000L*1.06M(KGS)/V(L))*80% = 20,352 KGS

5. Why do Max/Min payload have restriction
A tank container is a movable and confined pressurized vessel, which is used to load liquid petrochemical products and edible foodstuff for transportation on land and sea. When a tank container experienced unbalanced stability due to sudden unexpected situation, the cargo in the tank container will still be moving because of inertia and liquidity of the cargo. Such a movement will force an impact to the vehicle and the tank which might caused an accident. On the other hand, when such a confined tank container is overloaded with liquid cargo, the cargo might inflate because of temperature imbalance (coefficient of thermal expansion) and consequently it will cause a pressure on the tank and there might be a risk of cargo leakage. For these reasons, many countries incorporate the clause "Max/Min quantity to load" as law to ensure safety during transportation.
6. Material of Tank Shell
The American Iron and Steel Institute adopts a 3-digit number code to mark the different types of stainless steel. The Austenitic Stainless 300 Series is the most popular and acceptable material for tank containers, out of which AISI 304/AISI304L and AISI316/AISI316L are in dominance. It is chosen due to its rustless and anti-corrosion characteristics and also its interaction between chemical compound of steel in relation under which the steel is used and environment factor.
7. Types of Tank Containers
Except for the substances of Class 4.1 and Class 5.2 using Type T23 and Class 2 (gas) products using Type T50 (non-refrigerated liquified gases) and Type T75 (refrigerated liquified gases), the type of tank containers used are respectively classified into Type T1-Type T22 in accordance with the four-criterions "Minimum Test Pressure", "Minimum Shell Thickness", "Pressure-Relief Devise Arrangements" and "Bottom Opening" specified in the IMDG Code.
8. Organizations under UN to supervise Dangerous Cargo
Transportation One of UN's mission is to supervise the safety in transportation of dangerous cargo. A sub-organization of the United Nations, Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC), is responsible for developing recommendations, rules, regulations and global legislation for all dangerous substances transportation by each transport mode which has its own specialized sub-organizations as below :
Transportation at sea ----IMO (Int'l Maritime Organization)
Transportation by air ----ICAO & ITAT
Transportation of radioactive material ----IAEA
Railroad transportation ----OCTI & RID
Highway transportation ----ADR
River and lake transportation ----ITC, CRC, & ADNR
Tank container transportation involves various transport modes, such as, by sea, on rail, on road and over inland waterway. Hence, as far as its design and transportation choice are concerned, meeting the requirement of all rules given by these organizations is a must.
9. International Maritime Organization
In 1948 the United Nations had a treaty to formally established an organization "IMCO" abbreviated from the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization. IMCO started its operation in London in 1958 and changed its name to International Maritime Organization (IMO). IMO had passed several resolutions and agreements in respect of issues on maritime safety and ocean environment protection such as below :-     SOLAS(74) - International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea

•MARPOL(73/78)- International Convention for Prevention of Maritime Pollution from Ships
•IMDG Code(1965)- International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code

An assembly, councils, sub-committees and working groups are well organized in the IMO in accordance with its own specific assignments. Two councils, Maritime Safety Council and Maritime Environment Protection Committee, dedicate their focus on the technical issues in connection with the safety of ships and marine pollution respectively.

The MSC coordinates and integrate all recommendations and advices presented from subject sub-committees and working groups will make statutory amendments to the IMDG Code. In the same way, the MEPC amends the MARPOL73/78.
10. International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code or IMDG Code is a publication released by IMO in 1965 which outlines the rules and regulations regarding harmful and hazardous substances, specifying the safety operation guidance such as, classification of hazardous substances, construction and testing of packaging and provisions pertaining to the consignment procedures and safety operations for transport at sea. Based on the SOLAS 1974 (the resolution concerning Safety Of Life At Sea), MARPOL 73/78 was also incorporated into the IMDG Code. This is a very important publication in transportation safety which will be revised every 2 years for practical purpose.

  中证网讯 (记者 孙翔峰)近日,中国远洋海运集团和日本商船三井宣布,即将联手开辟一条北极LNG(液化天然气)运输航道,将液化天然气运往亚洲区域市场,此举有望使运输时间节省一半以上。业内人士分析,国内LNG需求将逐步释放,LNG运输企业将迎来机遇。
